Lynn Groves Lussier, Kittatinny Valley State Park

Lynn Groves Lussier will provide an introduction to some very common plants which grow in lawns and gardens, along roadsides, and even from cracks in concrete. To many gardeners, they are little more than prolific pesky weeds, but to others, these abundant plants provide not only beauty, but also food, drink, medicine, entertainment, and even inspiration for poetry. Far from being ordinary, “weeds” are among our most valuable and useful plants.

3:00 PM - Land Stewardship for Landscapes Large and Small
Donna Traylor, Agriculture Resource Specialist

Donna Traylor, from the Sussex County Office of Conservation and Farmland Preservation, will present a program on land stewardship – landscapes large and small. Although many people identify land stewardship with large vistas and public lands, there is a lot individuals can do in their own backyards. After examining some of the public lands (State and Federal Parks and Forests) and projects by environmental non-profits, the program will turn toward smaller landscapes – a pocket park in your neighborhood or your own backyard. By providing habitat needs through natural landscaping, you can entice both furred and feathered critters to call your home their home. This may be as easy as planting a perennial bed with appropriate flowers to attract butterflies or hummingbirds, creating brush piles or bringing in more native plants which will encourage birds and other mammals back into an area that is currently lawn. There is a lot each individual can do to be a good land steward.

Join Ben Del Coro of Fossil Farms in this inspiring cooking demonstration and learn from the best. It was theeere that he found the spark that fueled a career spanning thee past 20 years. He attended and gradulated from The Culinary Institute of America in 1997. His quest to understand food led him torhough many NYC and NJ restaurants and across the county having spent over 4 years honing his craft in Santa Fe, NM.

In 2008 he opened another chapter in his culinary career, leaving the restaurant industry and joining Fossil Farms based in Boonton, NJ. Fossil Farms is an all natural farm raised game and specialty meat distributor that works with many local and regional farms to provide many of the top toques in NYC and nationwide with completely natural meats. This career change provided the opportunity to work closely with the likes of Tom Colicchio (owner and chef of Craft, Craft Bar, Craft Steak, Colicchio & Sons and Top Chef Judge), David Chang (owner and chef of the Momofuku restaurant group), Mario Batali and so many more.

He resides in Sparta with his wife and two boys. There they have started and continue to operate the popular Sparta Farmers Market as well he is on the board of trustees of the Foodshed Alliance

2:00 pm - Produce Pete, From Weekend Today in New York, WNBC Channel 4

“Apples with a stem are less mealy.” So advises Produce Pete, featured on NBC’s Saturday morning show. Meet this common sense expert who “knows a little about a lot” when it comes to fruits and vegetables. Pete’s book, Farmacopeia, will be available for purchase. Buy one and Pete will autograph it for you!

Pete has been in the produce business his whole life, and started out selling produce off the back of a truck at auctions and at his parents' roadside stand.

Pete's family has been in business since 1953 at the same location in Bergenfield, New Jersey. From 1971 - 1997 Pete owned and operated this family "seasonal" business. In January 1998 he turned over the business to his son Peter Charles making him the 3rd generation to own Napolitano's Produce. In April of 2006, Napolitano's Produce closed its doors after 53 years, a sad day but everything comes to an end.

Because of obesity and fast foods in schools Pete has been asked to speak at numerous grammar schools and high schools about healthy eating and his love for produce. Pete is 66 years old and has been in the produce business since the age of 4 and peddled door-to-door and met many interesting people. He has worked with customers all his life and enjoys people. In this economy, with two people in the household working there is a need for good advice on what to buy and how to prepare it with homemade recipes - keeping the cost down.
