Agricultural Events Schedule - see "Agricultural Area" under the daily schedule for the Fair

The Agriculture Division of the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show includes 4 open-sided livestock barns with livestock rotating throughout the ten days; a small animal building; Livestock Pavilion with livestock shows daily, milking parlor with scheduled milking; greenhouse with vegetable & forage show; RoNetco Supermarkets Farm Fun Building with hands-on activities for children; and Melody Farm Follies singing vegetable presentation.

Flower and Garden Expo Lectures


Saturday, August 5th (2 p.m.) Establishing a Wild Life Habitat - Jeannie Geremia


Jeannie  Geremia  is  The  Garden  Club  of  New  Jersey  Inc.'s  1st Vice  President, GCNJ's  Wildlife  Habitat  Chair,  National  Garden  Clubs,  Inc.  Accredited  Life Flower Show Judge, and Contributing Writer for Gardener News. Jeannie initiated and  led  the  successful  campaign  to  have  the  Black  Swallowtail  Butterfly designated as the Official State Butterfly of New Jersey, and she, along with Diana Kazazis of the GCNJ, also created the "Pollinator Center" Project and signage as a vehicle to grow our pollinator population.


Monday, August 7th (afternoon) Creating a Butterfly Container Garden - April Fisher


Who doesn't love butterflies? If you want to have them winging into your yard, create a butterfly container garden. April Fisher, Master Gardener, will demonstrate how to entice beautiful butterflies with host and nectar flowers. Learn about the species common to our county, what they need to thrive and how you can make a difference in their survival.


April Fisher is a Master Gardener and Native Plant Society member. She is the recipient of the Master Gardener Award of Excellence for her informative lectures on gardening and floral arranging. She has also won several awards for her floral arrangements and horticultural entries here at the fair. She is a part time sales associate at Ideal Farm & Garden in Lafayette. April and her husband, David, live in Stillwater and their garden along the Paulinskill has been on the Arts & Heritage Garden Tour. Currently, April is transitioning her garden into an eco-friendly and low maintenance one so she can spend more time "smelling the roses"!


Wednesday, Aug 9th (2 p.m.) The Wonders of Coleus - Maureen Verbeek


Maureen's love of coleus goes way back when her grandmother shared a coleus cutting with her. Many of today's coleus are vastly different from the coleus her grandmother grew. No longer is coleus just a shade plant or an upright variety. Maureen will share the ways she uses coleus at the fairgrounds and will provide examples of the multitude of varieties that are available to gardeners.


Maureen is a Master Gardener of Sussex County and a Horticulturist at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Maureen has been involved in the greenhouse business off and on since 1977. With the demands of an ever expanding Sussex County Fairgrounds, Maureen was hired in 2004 as the fairgrounds first horticulturist. Each year Maureen raises over 10,000 plants in the greenhouse. With her crew and Master Gardener volunteers, the annuals are planted in the landscape, planters, hanging baskets, and flower boxes.


Thursday, August 10th (2 p.m.) Birds in the Garden - Giselle Chazotte-Smisko


Birds can add color, songs, life, and free pest control to the garden. Landscaping with birds in mind can create a vibrant habitat to be enjoyed by the birds and the gardener. Suggestions on attracting  songbirds  and  hummingbirds  with  a  variety  of  plants,  creating  a  habitat,  and controlling unwanted species will be discussed. Live birds from the Avian Wildlife Center will be a part of the program.


Giselle  Chazotte-Smisko  is  director  of  the  Avian  Wildlife  Center,  a  nonprofit organization  dedicated  to  wildlife  conservation.   She  is  a  licensed  wildlife  rehabilitator  and  a teacher  naturalist  having  worked  for  the  Morris  County  Park  Commission,  Union  County Department of Parks and Recreation, and The Raptor Trust.  She serves as an officer on theboard of Friends of Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, working with the staff to conserve the habitat  and  wildlife  of  refuge  and  coordinate  public  programs  on  a  variety  of  natural  history topics.


Friday, August 11th (afternoon) Into the Minds of Judges - Linda Williams


Ever  wonder  what  the  judges  are  looking  for  when  they  make  their  decisions? Learn how to make your entries blue ribbon ready.


Linda Williams is a National Garden Club Flower Show Judge, recently attained Life Status level of Life status.  She is the Past President of Community Garden Club of Hunterdon County, 2 terms.  Presently, she is the District 4 Director, with over 15 garden clubs in the district.  She is also the middle man between NJ State President and the District Presidents, filtering of all correspondence and problems.  She is a Gardening Consultant, equivalent to master gardener program but offered through National Garden Club program.  Linda is taking National Garden Club courses to become landscape consultant.


Saturday August 12th Clean Communities - Diane & Mike Dove


Diane & Mike Dove of Dove Environmental Education presents Clean Communities "Critter & Litter" crafts session with garden visitors and/or pollinators Theme. 1 pm to 3 pm Sponsored by Sussex County Clean Community; 3 pm to 5 pm Sponsored by Sparta Twp. Clean Communities: Wild Garden Visitors.
